Finding a great family photo spot on the North Shore is about more than just a pretty view—it has to be safe, kid‑friendly, and easy to get to with strollers and snacks in tow. Below are some of my favourite North and West Vancouver locations, with pros, cons, safety notes, kid‑friendly scores, best times for best light, and parking tips.
Also, definitely don’t overlook our smaller North Shore parks and rivers—they are often quieter gems for relaxed, personal sessions.

Some North Vancouver Locations
The Shipyards/ Lower Lonsdale
The Shipyards area gives a more urban waterfront look, with the city skyline, pier, and colourful architecture. It’s perfect if your family loves a mix of industrial details and ocean views.[jenndispirito]
• Pros: City and harbour views, pier, plaza, and interesting backdrops in a walkable area; great coffee and treats nearby.[jenndispirito]
• Cons: Busier in evenings and during events; less “run wild” space compared with big parks.
• Safe & kid‑friendly: 8/10 – good for kids who can stay close and follow simple safety rules near railings and the water.
• Best time for light: Golden hour for skyline glow, or blue hour if you want twinkly city lights.
• Parking: Multiple paid lots and street parking.
Cleveland Dam/ Capilano River
Cleveland Dam offers one of the most dramatic North Shore backdrops with the reservoir, mountains, and wide grassy park. Capilano River Park combines forest, river views, bridges, and trails. It’s a favourite for families who love a hike with lots of little “adventure” stops.
• Pros: Toddler‑ friendly loop options, stroller‑ friendly routes from the salmon hatchery, bridges, streams, and rocks to explore.
• Cons: Some steeper sections and drop‑offs near the river on longer trails
• Safe & kid‑friendly: 9/10 – excellent for toddlers and preschoolers on the right route, with lots of natural play spots.
• Best time for light: Morning or late afternoon to avoid harsh overhead sun on the open dam area. Overcast days are perfect under the trees; late afternoon gives gentle, filtered light through the forest.
• Parking: Free parking near the dam and picnic areas and also near the hatchery and other trailheads; usually straightforward, but trailhead lots can fill on weekends.
Deep Cove
Deep Cove’s village, small beach, and mountain‑lined inlet create a beautiful, cozy setting for family photos. However, parking is the main challenge, especially in summer.
• Pros: Charming village feel, beach, docks, and forested hillsides for a very “North Shore” look.
• Cons: Very limited street parking; lots fill early, especially in peak season, so timing is critical.
• Safe & kid‑friendly: 9/10 – great for kids if you stay near the beach and park areas, with easy access to treats afterward.
• Best time for light: Early morning weekends for parking and soft light; or golden hour if you’re prepared to walk from a farther lot.
• Parking: Street parking and several lots, but all are in very high demand; weekend sessions work best if we plan early or use overflow options.
Cates Park
Cates Park offers forest, beach, and open fields, with space for kids to roam and explore. It’s versatile and often a bit less hectic than some other waterfront spots.
• Pros: Big parking lot, beach, trees, and open grassy areas; good for families of all ages.
• Cons: Can get busier on summer evenings; some rocky sections on the beach.
• Safe & kid‑friendly: 9/10 – lots of room to move, good sightlines, and options to step back from the water if needed.
• Best time for light: Morning for quieter sessions; late afternoon and golden hour for warm light over the water.
• Parking: Large parking lots near the park and beach area that generally make arrival easier than in Deep Cove.
And Some West Vancouver Locations
Ambleside Beach
Ambleside gives you ocean, beach, mountain views, and the Lions Gate Bridge all in one place, with paths that work well for strollers and toddlers. It’s ideal if you want variety without driving between multiple spots.
• Pros: Ocean and bridge views, long beach, grassy fields, seawall, easy strolls for all ages.
• Cons: Parking (paid) fills quickly on sunny days and in summer; can be busy with walkers and dogs.
• Safe & kid‑friendly: 9/10 – flat paths, wide open sightlines, easy exits from the beach.
• Best time for light: Golden hour (1–2 hours before sunset) for soft light over the water; early mornings if you want fewer crowds.
• Parking: Paid public lots next to the park; limited spots on nice days, so arrive early or choose a weekday.
John Lawson Park
John Lawson is a classic family park, with a playground, splash pad in warmer months, and big grassy areas right beside the ocean. It works beautifully for younger kids who need breaks to climb, run, and play.
• Pros: Excellent playground and seasonal splash pad, big green space, flat and stroller‑friendly, washrooms nearby.
• Cons: Parking can be tight on sunny weekends; playground area can get very busy.
• Safe & kid‑friendly: 10/10 – designed for families, with good visibility and amenities.
• Best time for light: Late afternoon to sunset for warm light over the water; mornings for quieter sessions with soft light.
• Parking: Street and small nearby lots; plan extra time on weekends to find a spot.
Dundarave Beach
Dundarave feels like a small seaside village, with beach access, a play area, and the seawall all within a short walk. It’s great if you want to finish photos and then grab a hot chocolate or ice cream.
• Pros: Sandy and rocky beach, children’s play area, seawall, cute village shops just steps away.
• Cons: Popular on sunny days; beach can be narrow at higher tides.
• Safe & kid‑friendly: 9/10 – family‑oriented with play space and good visibility, but keep little ones close near the water.
• Best time for light: Golden hour for glowing sky and backlit water; overcast days work very well here too.
• Parking: Mix of street parking and small lots; usually manageable but allow a bit of buffer time.
Caulfield Park
Caulfeild is a bit of a hidden gem, with rocky outcrops, ocean views, and a strong “West Coast” feel. It works best for families with kids who are steady on their feet and love to climb.
• Pros: Dramatic cliffs and rocks, ocean and island views, more secluded feel than the bigger parks.
• Cons: Rocks can be uneven and slippery; not ideal for toddlers learning to walk or anyone unsteady on their feet.
• Safe & kid‑friendly: 7/10 – wonderful for older kids and teens; more supervision needed for small children.
• Best time for light: Golden hour or soft overcast days; mid‑day sun can be harsh on the rocks.
• Parking: Street parking in the surrounding residential area; usually available but be respectful of neighbours.
